crowded as we begin the holiday weekend. as you see right now, looks to be smooth. maybe people pulled off to buy a lottery ticket or perhaps get a little greek food there at primm. don't be surprised if you see more troopers and police officers on patrol for the travel rush. we wish you a good friday afternoon. i'm reed cowan. >> i'm marie mortera. between state line and primm in las vegas dozens of drivers on i-15 being cited for speeding. news 3's craig fiegener has more on this latest crackdown. >> we are about 15 miles south of the las vegas strip. behind me along side the 15 freeway northbound, interstate 15, that is the nevada highway patrol. we have seen literally more than a dozen nevada highway patrol troopers pulling over people who we believe were speeding. at least that was maybe the reason why they initially pulled them over. starting today the california
police in southern nevada. they're teaming up with a focus on drivers who are speeding, drivers who are distracted or drivers who appear to be breaking the law or perhaps driving dangerously. this is all because of the labor day holiday weekend. which begins this maximum enforcement friday. that continues into monday for the labor day holiday. again, along side the 15 freeway here you are seeing the result of that maximum enforcement. we've seen a lot of these plates oneh the message to anybody is going to be driving whether in to southern nevada, las vegas, or south to california, is that the nhp and the california highway patrol together are putting an added focus on people who might be speeding or breaking other laws. on both directions of the 15 freeway as we head into this labor day holiday weekend. i'm craig fiegener reporting. news 3. >> reed: thank you.
here in our valley. >> marie: definitely sunny out there. much different day from yesterday where we saw the clouds. a little bit of rain. we're going to check in to our weather authority forecast and see what is in store for this evening and the long holiday. >> we're expecting a cool down for the labor day holiday. a few more clouds as we look east. pretty nice weather outside. today toasty. temperatures in the triple-digits for the downtown area. north las vega 100 henderson. the winds have picked up quite a bit. here is a look at the current wind speeds with gusts reaching up to 30 miles an hour. 32-mile-an-hour wind so far southeast. 31-mile-an-hour gusts for summerlin. breezy weather continues through the weekend. but a cool down as we make our way into labor day. mostly dry conditions will continue. the chances for thunderstorms will continue to decrease over the next several days through the weekend and into monday.
we'll be starting off with temperatures in the mid-70s and our high temperature will only be around 90 degrees. we'll show you how we're going get to these numbers with your full 7-day forecast. that's coming up in a few minutes. reed and marie, back to you. >> reed: it's already a deadly start to september after two separate shootings minutes apart leave two people dead. the first shooting happened just before 8:00 at the park at lake mead near martin luther king. a man was shot inside a car. the victim later died at the investigated as accidental. the second shooting happened near twain and paradise also around 8:00 p.m. it left one person dead in an al vi ym -- alley. no suspects are in custody. if you know anything call crimestoppers at 702-385-5555. >> marie: now to an update we've been following all day. investigators working to determine why a fire was intentionally set at a church near north fifth and lake mead.
the fire only caused minimal damage. so far no arrests have been made. >> reed: outrage in a southern highlands community over blasting taking place in their backyard. it's part of construction to develop hundreds of new homes. news 3 has been following this story about a week. >> we were there when county commissioners showed up to talk to homeowners who say look this blasting has gone on far enough. they've been suffering from damage. news 3's nathan an feeks are getting -- folks are getting desperate. >> near cactus and jones this is the area where all that blasting was taking place to make way for hundreds of new homes. but the problem is that neighbors say this is just happening way too close to their homes. you can see the affected homes on the edge of the hill. this all started with a large boom and a rattle. an explosion. this is what residents say is responsible for splitting the walls and ceilings and floors in their homes.
many folks feel like they've been ignored by people in power. today clark county commissioner met with homeowners one-on-one hearing their concerns about a lack of notification about blasting, their concerns about safety and their fears about how much it might cost them to repair the damages to their home. >> it's hearing from them and determining what we can do. can it be stopped completely for a little while? can we have someone out here with the and is able to say what things are happening from. is it a matter of checking the wall and the hill is right behind their homes on this particular street. >> reporter: gregor says she would like to see a town hall of some style of meeting between the residents so they can voice their concerns about this issue. but she has been advised not to attend if those residents bring attorneys along. she did say that she would consider having her staff
o'neal, news 3. >> reed: thank you so much. >> marie: we want to give you a live look at the stormy conditions as hermine continues to pummel south carolina this afternoon. the storm slammed into the gulf coast of florida overnight damaging beach side communities and flooding low lying areas. >> reed: this live picture from mount pleasant south carolina. the storm has weakened because it went over land and they often do break up. it's still packing a punch as it pushes across gia carolinas. >> marie: the national hurricane center is issuing tropical storm watches and warnings as far as new england through the labor day weekend. jay gray with the latest. >> reporter: the initial strike was violent. driving rains and sustained winds of 80 miles an hour, gusts even stronger. hermine the first hurricane to make landfall in florida in more than a decade tearing apart the big bend region of the gulf coast. as the hurricane moved through
floridians experienced power loss. the storm surge as much as nine feet in some areas pushed water into places it's not supposed to go including homes along the shoreline. >> as the day progresses the water will continue to rise. >> reporter: inland hermine lost a bit of its power but very little of its punch. a tropical storm as it pushed into georgia. showing signs that it would continue to be a problem. >> there's probably 20 streets closed right now rain at high tide. >> reporter: trees and power lines are down here as well. as the system picked up speed moving into the carolinas where there's a growing concern about tornados and the damage hermine could inflict as it moves up the coast. >> we want this thing to move in and out as quick as possible. >> reporter: the forecast shows it will continue to move up the eastern seaboard. the sun and beach goers out in new jersey right now. but these sandbags a warning of

flooding to areas along the florida gulf coast. >> marie: we do want to talk about our weather. you have been tracking hermine as well. nice to see that things have calmed down a bit. but let's talk about what's happening here. >> chloe: yeah certainly quite an eventful night. looking, you know, really praying for people who are impacted by that storm. it has decreased momentum as it passes over land. now a tropical storm. we'll show you the movement coming up. winds picking up today. here is a look at one of the time-lapses. one of our many weather stations where we show you what's happening around the region. a few scattered clouds over the red rock area. mostly clear. a lot of people on the water this afternoon. you can see lake mead a lot of boats. counting them over the last six hours this is a look at the weather conditions off and on seeing a few scattered clouds. overall pretty nice conditions.
see winds pick up more through the weekend. another glimpse of what's what's been going on. just a few scattered clouds as we take a look at the temperatures around the region. looking at 101 degrees for las vegas rv. winds pretty prominent. gusting up to 34 miles an hour. lake mead seeing breezy conditions. moapa also seeing winds over the 30-mile-an-hour threshold. no advisories issued. it has to be stronger. sustained winds over 35 m most of the valley in the triple digits at the moment. 99 at the lakes and 94 for summerlin. winds out of the south. here is a look at the current winds happening in the neighborhoods right now with gusts up to 20 to 30 miles an hour. we're going see a repeat of that by tomorrow. the rest of the evening expect breezes to continue under mostly clear skies continuing overnight into tomorrow morning. we are tracking now tropical storm hermine as it continues to make its way through the
moving in a northwest direction 20 miles an hour for that speed. the sustained winds of this storm as of right now around 50 miles an hour. slowly decreasing momentum. as we get closer to our area a few storms popping up east of us over northwest arizona. we're going to see that activity die down as we make our way through the weekend. we've been mostly dry in las vegas. we're going keep that trend up as we continue into labor day. clear conditions, low pressure will pass through continuing to slightly cooler weather into the weekend. looking at 77 for he overnight temperature tonight in las vegas. look at the regional temps. pretty nice to be honest. highs tomorrow won't be as warm as they were today. only 100 degrees for lake mead. 90 for pahrump. 70 mount charleston. we're anticipating around 98 degrees. temperatures near normal for this time of year. those winds are going to pick up later in the afternoon with gusts reaching up to 25 and 30 miles an hour in our neighborhoods. so expect to see the breezy weather through the weekend.
